Maranata - Tarmac
(harsh noise)
Put out by White Centipede Noise, "Tarmac" is an album that asks you one question: do you like the saxophone? If you do, prepare to possibly hate what this project will do to the sound of the instrument. If you don't like saxophone, you might get into the tortured sounds Maranata has pulled out of the thing. While one member focusses on drawing out a brass instrument into sheer audial torture, the other member of the duo adds their own layer of static condemnation via electronics. The calming, simplistic nature of the album art leads the listener into expecting a softer ride. Perhaps this is a cleverly laid trap, as the two tracks spanning nearly 45 minutes force you to face the panicked sea of incomprehensibility. Adding a standard instrument to a noise record can be frowned upon by some, but if you were not told a saxophone was present, you'd perhaps not know. Abstraction by ways of no-input mixer sounds (with other channels possibly taken up by god knows what) is one thing, but finding those deeply unrooting threads in a sax runs an intriguing parallel. A warped tropical feel for those experiencing radically uncomfortable temperatures.
